U of MN Homecoming 2002 - A Legacy of Heroes

Homecoming Schedule Updated - Football Game Now OCTOBER 10, 7pm METRODOME What does it mean to be a hero? Find out during Homecoming 2002, "A Legacy of Heroes," where the campus community, alumni and friends will gather to celebrate school spirit and honor the heroes in our lives - from the larger-than-life superheroes like super-powered Goldy Gopher, to everyday heroes like teachers and firefighters. A tradition at the U since 1914, Homecoming 2002 will feature annual traditions such as the bonfire, pep fest, Farmer's Share Breakfast and parade, but it will also feature events throughout the week, such as student competitions, an outdoor showing of the new "Spiderman" movie and free concerts. September 30 - October 5
Homecoming Preview Week

Homecoming 2002 warm-up week includes plenty of "legendary" action including flag football prelims, Homecoming button sales and royalty competitions. Also, move over Ed McMahon - we've got the Goldy's Prize Patrol! Goldy's gang of superheroes will be giving away cool prizes as they crusade through campus all week! Complete Preview Week Schedule

Monday, October 7
"Summon the Heroes"
Kickoff Day

Homecoming 2002 kicks off with free lunch on Northrop Plaza and the Homecoming Hero's Medallion Hunt. Then, students from across campus will strut their stuff at the campus-wide lip-sync contest at 7 p.m. in Willey Hall, "syncing" anything from classic rock 'n roll to today's top 40 hits. Tuesday, October 8
"A Hero's Venture"
St. Paul Day

Venture to the St. Paul campus for some "down on the farm" activities. Scale the rock-climbing wall, watch the excitement of cheer competition prelims, and don't miss the royalty cow milking and open milk chugging contests! As an added bonus, end your day with a couple episodes of "Gophers Singled Out." Click for more of Tuesdays's events.

Wednesday, October 9
"Heroes Assemble"
Pepfest, coronation and bonfire

Get pumped before the big game Thursday night! The annual Homecoming royalty coronation, bonfire and pep fest heats up the night on the St. Paul Gym Field, featuring a performance by the marching band and cheer squad and speeches from your favorite Gopher coaches. Thursday, October 10
"The Calm Before the Storm"
Twin Cities Student Unions Day

Head to the central gathering places on campus, your student unions! Coffman may be closed until January 2003, but fun activities will occur from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the West Bank plaza. Also, check out the free noon concert and evening film at the St. Paul Student Center. Click for more of Thursday's events.

Friday, October 11
"Heroes In Action"
Residence Hall Day

Show your school spirit by wearing maroon and gold! The action is at the residence halls with free bagels from 7:30-9 a.m. Also throughout the day in Residence Hall lobbies, there will be tie-dying, free haircuts, massage therapy and temporary tattoos! Visit the Superblock for costume contests, inflatable games, superhero trivia contests, free lunch, ice cream eat-off and a free outdoor movie! After the excitement ends on the superblock, head to Minneapolis for Women's Volleyball action or visit Williams Arena for Gopher Men's Basketball Midnight Madness! Saturday, October 12
"Another Hero Is Made"

Gather with a friend for a good pancake breakfast at the McNamara Alumni Plaza from 8-10:30 a.m. or the Farmer's Share Breakfast and Auction on the St. Paul campus. At 10 a.m., witness the Homecoming Parade of Heroes on University Avenue, and be sure to watch the Gopher Men's Hockey team at the Xcel Energy Center. Click for more of Saturday's events.
