Group Description

Categories: Academic and Educational, Honorary and Leadership, Special Interest and Hobby

The Mission of the Biochemistry club at the University of Minnesota is to improve the educational experience, provide career advancement tools and specialized leadership training opportunities for majors in the discipline with the goal of enabling students to more effectively reach their career objectives. To that end, the Biochemistry Club facilitates the development of study groups and tutorials, provides opportunities for corporate partners and students to meet and explore career development, engages in learning sessions for graduate and professional school applications, and provides students with an opportunity to organize and manage the Club with staff and faculty support.

Group's principal activities, events, or programs:

Our activities include presentations by external company's and corporations on careers in biochemistry, organization of study groups for biochemistry students in various classes, site visits to potential employers, career counseling with respect to graduate and biomedical programs, social and team building events, particularly those that are
service oriented, builds leadership opportunities for students, and provides a point of entry for students into research laboratories.

How this group's activities benefit the University community:

Our activities produce a more highly skilled and knowledgeable student that will be an asset to a company or corporation and will enhance their degree completion in a timely manner. It also improves our graduation rates and develops a more highly engaged student capable of functioning as a leader. Our activities also promote a diverse student body and empower students to higher career goals.

How this group fits into its categories:

Each activity and event is designed to improve the quality of the educational product we produce at the university by increasing the
understanding and experience based of students who study biochemistry. The academic issues we address (student study groups, career development) partners well with the educational goals (mentoring, entree into research labs) thereby improving the undergraduate experience for biochemistry majors.

How to get involved with this group:

Our meetings are open announcements (no application, all are welcome) and we have Web based advertising on our BMBB home page (Majors corner on home page with upcoming events). We also make classroom announcements by Club organizers.
