The Music Therapy Student Association is a student-led group involved in the study of music therapy. We strive to further ourselves as therapists through educational speakers, informational meetings, community volunteering and fundraising opportunities to asisst with conference fees.

Group's principal activities, events, or programs:

The main activities of the MTSA feature:
Educational meetings where guest speakers from the music therapy community come to speak on important issues in the lives of music therapist and music therapy students.
Guitar and Keyboard workshops to enhance the students skills in these areas.
Community volunteering to give the students hands-on experience early in their education.
Networking with other music therapy, music ed, special ed, pre-med, psychology, and students in other related majors.

How this group's activities benefit the University community:

The MTSA's activities benefit the U of M community through the real life experiences provided for the students. Valuable information, important first-hand opportunities and connections in the area of their interest create unique opportunities for MTSA members.
The MTSA is also of benefit to the U of M by volunteering in the community around the U. This not only gives the U neighborhood valuable assistance but also continues the U of M's reputation as a college that cares for its community.

How this group fits into its categories:

The MTSA fits into two different categories. The first one is fine arts/music, and the MTSA fits into this category because it is primarily a group for music majors. Many of the activities and meetings are related to the topic of music.
The second category that MTSA fits under is health and wellness as music therapy is in fact a health care field. Music therapists work to help clients reach physical, mental, and emotional goals.

If anyone is interested in the MTSA please contact Melissa Huntsinger at hunt0407@umn.edu. We love to meet new people and add students from a variety of majors to our group. Regular meeting times and places will be set and posted by late August.
