Group Description

Categories: Cultural and Diversity, Political and Social Action

To promote awareness of human rights throughout the world. We focus on: prisoners of conscience, political prisoners, abolishing the death penalty and stopping torture. This is a non-partisan human rights group working for the betterment of all people around the world.

Group's principal activities, events, or programs:

We promote awareness, education, and action for various global human rights issues. We work on everything from freeing individual prisoners of conscience to larger social issues. We also write weekly "urgent-action" action letters to address current issues.

How this group's activities benefit the University community:

They provide an opportunity for people to learn about human rights issues and take action on them.

How this group fits into its categories:

We take on issues that deal with cultures around the world, and in turn learn more about those cultures. The bulk of our work is on political and social issues, and involve a lot of letter writing and other sorts of communication with public officials.

How to get involved with this group:

Please email us at amnesty@umn.edu to get on our weekly email list and get meeting reminders and event notifications. Meetings occur weekly during fall and spring semesters, and are usually held in Coffman Union.
