Group Description

Categories: Academic and Educational, Governing Bodies and Departmental Boards, Special Events

The CLA Student Board is the official undergraduate student government of the College of Liberal Arts. We maintain open communication with the administration, and seek to make students' voices heard. If you have an issue or concern, you would like us to address, let us know. You are always welcome to mail, stop by our office (12 Johnston) or come to one of our meetings. We are here to serve CLA students.

Group's principal activities, events, or programs:

The CLA Student Board is the governing body of the CLA student community. We host a number of events to encourage student involvement, community building and the development of leadership skills.
We also have a close relationship with faculty, staff and the dean of students.
We hold an art fair, student/teacher dinners, a 5k run, the major fair, open forums and a student talent exhibition.

How this group's activities benefit the University community:

The activities that we host benefit the community in a number of ways with the interaction between students being a top priority. Some events highlight the different talents of CLA students, while others help them decide what to do with their time here at the U. The students involved also gain a heightened sense of leadership.

How this group fits into its categories:

Students interact not only within the student board, but within their community as well by taking on a leadership role. We helped stop the sale of items produced in sweatshops on campus and are occasionally asked to help in other broad issues. We have worked with the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and other administrators to redesign the CLA language requirement. In general, we act as a liaison between CLA students and administration. We take CLA students' concerns, suggestions and feedback and relay that to the appropriate faculty/staff who are in the position to get things changed.

How to get involved with this group:

Membership is based on recurring attendance to board meetings. A student must show up to a meeting (Johnston room B-33 Wednesdays at 3:30pm) and then fill out an application. After three weeks of continuous attendance the student maybe voted in to become an official member. For more information please e-mail joh02836@umn.edu
