Group Description

Categories: Academic and Educational, Service, Special Interest and Hobby

Ever heard of the Toyota Prius? Interested in joining a group of like-minded peers for an evening of Classics-themed entertainment? You don't have to know Latin. You don't have to know Greek. We don't even require you to show your Coptic membership card at the door. Just bring yourself, your friends, and an interest in the fantastic, sublime and sometimes not-so-sublime elements of Classical languages and culture. The Toyota Prius, by the way, is actually the Toyota Sooner in Latin. See? You're already learning new things from the Classics.

Group's principal activities, events, or programs:

We meet for informal talks on Classical topics and frequently host guest speakers from the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies.

How this group's activities benefit the University community:

1. Provides common ground for students across academic disciplines.

2. Promotes the study of Classical languages and culture that in turn provides the elements of a well-rounded education. For further details on the inclusion of the Classics in the University curriculum, read the "Yale Report of 1828" at http://collegiateway.org/reading/yale-report-1828/

3. Encourages students to participate in their education and provides leadership opportunities for future participants in the larger academic community.

How this group fits into its categories:

Joining the Classics Club does not mean you'll be spending all day in the salt mines. We work hard and play hard and the Classics Club is an opportunity meet different people and enjoy the extracurricular elements of the Classics that you might not get to see in the classroom.
