The American Indian Science and Engineering Society is a private, non-profit oganization that nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional native values. AISES' goal is to be a catalyst for advancement of American Indians as they grow to become self reliant and self-determined members of society. Our student chapter supports students in science, engineering and other fields.
Group's principal activities, events, or programs:
The AISES chapter at the University of Minnesota participates in the AISES National Conference as well as the AISES Regional Conference. AISES has hosted two regional conferences that invited other colleges/ high schools in the region, businesses, local American Indian members and University affiliates to share what AISES continues to strive for in the organizations mission. AISES members participates in community outreach programs at the University and other outside causes. AISES collaborates with other student organizations to host events as well attend retreats with outside organizations like the Minnesota Northstar Alliance for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
How this group's activities benefit the University community:
Our activities benefit the University community by helping those individuals that are interested in engineering, sciences and other fields to explore the opportunities at the university and other related groups of AISES. AISES helps exposes affiliates of the University about the American Indian culture while encouraging engineering and science as a focus . AISES collaborates with other groups to host educational activities that expose related fields and departments in the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities campus.
How this group fits into its categories:
We fit into the category we selected because AISES has an educational focus (engineering, science, and other fields) and a cultural diversity focus with our participation within the American Indian community at the university/ post-secondary, local communities in Minneapolis/ Saint Paul, state, and national level. We also keep our membership open to those who may not be of American Indian descent because there is much need for educational/ cultural exposure to any person who is interested in learning about the mission of AISES.
How to get involved with this group:
Someone can get involved in our group by e-mailing any one of our members, or responding to our fliers made by our Community Outreach Coordinator. There will be updates, event postings of current activities that AISES will be participating with. The only membership application required to participate in AISES would be at a national level. There are other departments and student groups that will be in collaboration with AISES and can find more ways to get involved with student activities at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities.
