Group Description

Categories: Cultural and Diversity, Service, Sorority (non-residential)

Sigma Lambda Gamma is the largest Latina-based multicultural sorority in the United States. We are an academic, cultural, service and social organization dedicated to providing a mechanism of empowerment to all women. We recognize our responsibility to the progression of a positive global community and therefore stress the importance of morals, ethics, and education in our daily lives so that we serve the needs of our neighbors through a mutual respect and understanding of our varying cultures.

Group's principal activities, events, or programs:

All of our activities and events focus on sisterhood as well as our five principles: Cultural Awareness, Community Service, Academics, Social Interaction and Morals & Ethics. Each semester we hold "Gamma Daze," a week of events focusing on our principles. We also host annual events such as a corn roast to support our national philanthropy, Susan G. Komen, and a toy drive to benefit Toys for Tots.

How this group's activities benefit the University community:

We serve as a positive example of strong, dedicated, intelligent multicultural women here at the University. Sigma Lambda Gamma promotes the development of women who have good character, who have high academic, moral and ethical standards. It promotes the development of leaders.

Because the women of Sigma Lambda Gamma hold community service as one of their five principles, we work to better not only the University community, but the surrounding community as well by giving back our time and resources in the form of volunteering and philanthropy projects.

How this group fits into its categories:

Cultural and Diversity - As the University’s only Latina-based multicultural sorority with Cultural Awareness as one of its principles, we clearly fit into the “cultural and diverse” organization category. Consistent with our motto, “Culture is Pride, Pride is Success,” we promote cultural awareness and celebrate all backgrounds; our chapter alone is comprised of individuals that identify with over 27 different ethnicities.

Service – With Community Service as one of our principles, we believe it is important to value the community which helped us get where we are today and give back to that community as a form of thanks.
