Group Description
Categories: Academic and Educational, Political and Social Action, Service
GSSA is a community of students dedicated to open dialogue about global issues. We value the diversity of opinions held by students and believe that our differences and similarities enrich the community we create. Our group thrives through discussion of global issues, various social events and fundraisers, and an annual international service project.
This year GSSA is traveling to Chebukwa Kenya to engage in various service projects in the areas of water reclamation, health care, nutrition.
Group's principal activities, events, or programs:
* Weekly meetings regarding current projects
* Events and discussions regarding global issues and current projects
* Project Fundraising
* International service projects
* Activities within the local community
How this group's activities benefit the University community:
GSSA provides global studies students the opportunity to gain experience in fundraising, event planning, program management and international development. In addition the group provides a foundation for networking within the major, at the university and in the local community. The group has performed service learning trips to Honduras over the past two years to implement international development projects in the areas of agriculture and medicine. This year the group will be working in Chebukwa, Kenya with the Nafula Foundation on projects related to rainwater reclamation, health care and nutrition.
How this group fits into its categories:
The Global Studies Student Association is committed to social justice, community service, and international development. We take active steps towards creating positive change in the global community. During the 08/09 school year we addressed children’s health, education and wellness issues by carrying out various services projects in support of Hogar de Ninos Tierra Santa, home for abandoned children, in La Villa de San Antonio, Honduras.
